All staff have had experience and the training of working with children in the early years setting and those with SEND too, however onsite there is a pre-school staff member who is SENCO trained who you will be introduced too and will be available at all times for you to be in contact with.

Some of the professionals we have had support us with children's individual needs are: Physiotherapists, Speech & Lanaguage, Occupational Therapists, Visual Impairment as well as working closely with the overall SENCO team.

What if my child needs extra support?

Decisions on how much support a child with SEN needs is monitored through observations the keyperson makes and the discussions held then with the manager, pre-school SENCO and parents. Extra support will be put into place if necessary with the aim to provide your child with the independence to grow and development with supervised and additional help along the way. The SENCO will advise parents on the process of applying for extra support if this is necessary.

Different types of funding will be identified through the level of extra support your child may need and this will be submitted to a panel of people who will decide this based from the settings collected information as well as other professionals working alongside your child and family.

If additional funding is given to your child, it may also be discussed with you on your child having a 1-1 staff member who will oversee your child's development during their sessions with us and support them in any way they can with the guidance from the pre-school SENCO.

Our trained SENCO's can offer advice and support to the key person assigned to the identified child. The SENCO will liaise with other professionals to seek further advice and support for the keyperson and parents in identifying individual needs if necessary. Support from the Area SENCO or other health care professionals can only be requested with parent's permission.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child's development, we offer opportunities for you to be able to discuss those concerns in confidentiality with the manager or your child's keyperson. This would also go for, if your child's keyperson has themselves identified a possible concern in your child's development, they will also make arrangements with you in order to discuss this.

What is SEND?

SEND stands for Special Educational Needs & Disabilities and at Georgie Porgy's Pre-School, we will accept any child who may have needs or a disability and also offer any help or guidance you may need during your child's school stay with us.

At Pre-School we complete on-going observational assessments and observations on all children within our care. These assessments/observations are linked to the 'Developmental Matters' ages and stages of development, which can help us identify individual needs of each child. These assessments and observations will then be discussed with the Pre-School SENCO and manager if we feel their may be a need which has not been addressed yet or a need where we could support more in.

We provide a flexible approach to routine and the environment around the children, allowing them extra time to adjust to situations and to process the next step in routine. Visual time tables are used to support children in understanding routine and time allowed to follow the routine through. As your child grows in their development, we will support them in managing their own risks with guidance and continuously support them and family throughout our time together.

How will my child be included day to day?

No matter what SEN need or disability your child may have, all children at Georgie Porgy's Pre-School will be included every step of their journey with us.

All activities are planned around the children's individual needs and abilities and is monitored throughout in order to adapt if needed. The staff approach is inclusive, positive and welcoming to all and reassurance is shared with parents on admission that we are an inclusive pre-school. Adaptations in arriving and leaving Georgie Porgy's Pre-School is covered by the use of steps or a ramp to enter/leave the building if this is an easier option for you and your child.

Visual aids, sensory play equipment/activities, 1-1 focussed activities, makaton and action songs are all ways we include every child in their stay with us.

Reports from health care professionals such as health visitors, speech&language therapists and more can identify children's individual needs and discuss those reports with parents. Georgie Porgy's Pre-School welcomes parents and professionals to come into the setting and share those reports with us so we can all work in partnership to plan and create next steps or possibly an IEP to meet your child's individual needs.

What is an IEP?

An IEP stands for 'Individual Educational Plan' which is put in place for those children with needs to help and support their learning and development through targets and observations.

With an IEP, we will listen to parents/carers contributions and the school or area SENCO advice in order to create targets for the child which can be met successfully throughout the terms or school year. The IEP will be reviewed each term to see if targets have been met at that time or to adjust targets. Your child's key person will work with parents to oversee the targets set and will acknowledge any additional information such as outside professionals needing to be involved.

Transitioning onto school

When a child with SEND has finished their journey with us and it is time to move onto reception, this can be overwhelming for the child and parents. The child's key person, pre-school SENCO and manager are invited to a final PCP meeting (person centred plan) along with outside professionals working with the child and family and possibly the child's next school, in order to put together a EHCP (Early Health Care Plan) which is an overall look on what the child has achieved, photographs, observations, targets/next steps, highlighting their needs all within the pre-schools time with them and the outside professionals observations and next steps too. This allows the transition between pre-school to reception a lot smoother and for the support to continue straight away.
